Understanding College Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Series in Partnership with the Sherlock Center on Disabilities

Were you aware that it is estimated that as many as 2% of students in higher education have some characteristics of an Autism Spectrum Disorder? And that while 40 RIC students have self-identified as having ASD and are receiving supports from the Office of Disability Services, there may be as many as 140 additional RIC graduate and undergraduate students with ASD. Students with ASD and associated challenges can impact teaching, learning and the culture in the classroom. Come to this series of workshops to get a better understanding of your students with an autism spectrum disorder and learn strategies to support their success.

Thursday, December 3, 11:00am-12:30pm—Strategies to Support Students in the Classroom
Participants will be provided with information on what types of academic and behavioral challenges are often seen in students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. In addition, they will learn practical, easy-to-implement strategies that can be used to respond to and support students (both academically and behaviorally) with Autism Spectrum Disorders in the classroom. Facilitated by Susan Constable (Rhode Island Technical Assistance Project) and either Dr. Paul LaCava (Special Education) or Deb Arenberg (Sherlock Center on Disabilities).
